Balancing Your Career and (More) Education

By the time graduation comes around, most students are ready to embark on fulfilling careers with no looking back. Although, throughout their careers there will come a time where updating their skill set will not only be an asset but will help set them apart from their peers. Today businesses are becoming more and more technologically advanced, meaning employees have to follow suit. Going back to school to upgrade or better yet, compliment your skill set, only brings positive results for career advancement and making new connections within your growing industry.

More Education?

Considering additional education can be a stress. Balancing your career and classes can seem like a nightmare. Although everyone’s situation is different, there are ways to balance a career, school, family, and live effectively. It may not be the easiest task you have ever attempted, but if you really want to enhance your resume or potential, you can make it work.

Where To Start

The first trait you need to develop or improve are likely your organizational skills. You simply will not have the time to waste frantically searching for your book, for example, or reprinting an essay. Keep all of your school supplies in one place, such as a backpack or briefcase. Replace textbooks as soon as you are finished with them for the day and add completed assignments immediately. Check supplies periodically to make sure you do not arrive at class without the necessary pens or pencils. Keep a log or calendar and record the due dates of all assignments, test dates and enrolment dates.

Balance Your Time

Never take more classes than you can handle. Remember that you will need an estimated three hours outside of class for every credit hour earned. You might need to take just one or two classes per semester. You could also consider on-campus courses that meet just one night a week or a school that offers a one course per month option. E-learning is also a good way for working adults to attain additional education. Some online classes hold Internet classes once a week, but others are self-paced and allow you to view the lectures on your own schedule.

Set up a regular schedule to study or complete assignments. Your family situation and personal preferences will dictate the best times to set aside for schoolwork. Some working adults prefer to set aside a block of time on the weekend, others prefer to schedule an hour or two every other night and still others prefer to set their alarms early and study before work. Whatever schedule you choose, build in an alternate day or time so that you can respond to family or work emergencies.

Taking Care

Take care of yourself by getting enough sleep, eating right and exercising. You might think that you lack the time, but safeguarding your health can have significant benefits. You will feel less stressed, more energetic and more alert. For most people, this translates to a reduced likelihood of burning out or becoming so frustrated with their busy schedule that they give up.

Goals

Finally, keep your focus on your goal. Remember why you are juggling a career and classes. If possible, set up a support network of family members or friends who will be supportive and remind you of the benefits that your busy schedule will ultimately provide. Stay committed, believe in yourself and keep going until you reach your goal.
